The IHFA High Milk Production Listing identifies sires for high input herds, targeting high individual cow milk and solids yields. Specifically, the Listing is for 8,000 litre plus systems (1780 gallons +) producing yields of over 308 kg of butterfat and 270 kg of protein. The Listing uses independent threshold values for milk traits to identify sires appropriate for 8,000 litre plus systems and then ranks these sires using the EBI.
Sires with PDs above +220 kg milk, +8.6 kg butterfat and +8.5 kg protein are included in the Listing. These threshold levels have been determined from a study of IHFA herds by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute, Hillsborough with support from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation showing these milk trait PDs are strongly associated with 8,000 litre plus, high input, systems.
