Tullamore Show Champion Croagh Fran 26 with handler Gary Jones
Tullamore Show bigger and better!
Tullamore show took place at Butterfield Estate, Blueball on Sunday 8th August in glorious sunshine. The omens were good from early morning that this was going to be a great show and so it proved to be. This is the second year for the show to be located at this venue having moved from Charleville Estate in 2008 where the first show took place in 1991.
Mark Nuttsford of “Riverdane”Holsteins , Cheshire, U.K. was the judge for the day. Mark is an excellent show man having won every major show in the UK with 36 All Britain Awards to his credit over the last 11 years. He is an International judge and has judged major shows in the UK, Canada, France and Ireland (Baileys). He milks 65 cows averaging 11,000 ltrs.
The show started with confined classes to Laois/Offaly and Westmeath breeders.
This was followed by the National Livestock Holstein Friesian classes
Mark when commenting on the various classes kept referring to the strength of quality to the cattle in each class from top to bottom with no tail end. The senior cow in milk had 13 cows competing, all having won major shows in their own right. It was a spectacle to behold, exceptional class of cows with every cow being worthy of first place. The judge commented” that in making his final choice it was down to the strength of dairy quality in his leading cow”. He tapped out Croagh Fran followed by Lumville Danoise 2. They were placed in the same order at the Baileys the previous week .It is a great credit to the breeders of these cows to have them out to two shows just a week apart.
The Champion was won by Messrs M&P Jones, Hallow Holsteins, Gorey Co Wexford with Croagh Fran 26. She was also best udder of the show.
The Reserve Champion went to Richard Whelan, Clonard, Co. Meath with Lumville Danoise 2
Honourable mention was Tom Murphy , Swiftsheath, Co Kilkenny with Ballythomas Adolph Mia, winner of the second calf class.
The heifer in milk class was won by Patrick and Derek Frawley, Croagh, Co. Limerick with Desmond Titanic Laureny. This was her first show and a great win.
The Junior Champion was won by Mervyn Kearney of the Salesian Agricultural College, Pallaskenry, Co. Limerick with Copeswood Goldwyn Helga and the reserve went to Paul & Marguerette Flanagan, Tubbertoby, Co Louth with Tubbertoby Alexander Ashley.
Fifteen young show people took part in this class which was a great success. There was huge interest from the general public with the ring side three and four deep with people watching the young show people of the future going through their routine.
A new class introduced this year was the AIB young stockmanship challenge. This class was judged by Ricky Barrett of “Laurelm” Holsteins Co Cork.
The winner was David Booth, Ballyduff, Stradbally, Co. Laois with Catriona Neville , Croagh, Rathkeale, Co Limerick in close second. Hon mention went to Rachel Mc Namara, Newtownshandrum, Co. Cork.
IHFA sponsored an in calf heifer for the first time to the Farmers Journal Heifer and Hoggett competition. The finals took place in Tullamore.
Tony Jackson of the Grove, Kiltegan acted as judge. And the heifer was kindly supplied by John Stone, Moate, Co. West Meath.
