Heifers top 6,800 gns at Eedy herd Youngstock Sale 2024

2,576 gns average, 95 % clearance as 6 heifers exceed prices over 4,000 gns

The Eedy herd of Robert, Sylvia, Jason & Laura Helen enjoyed a highly successful on-farm sale of youngstock on Saturday August 31st last. The sale was conducted by Taaffe Auction with forty-eight top quality youngstock lots catalogued on offer. The Eedy herd has enjoyed some tremendous success at National level in recent times with key cow families to the fore in this success and the performance of these families was recognised in a trade that was consistantly brisk and sharp throughout the sale.

Sale Overview

  • Eedy Lemagic Acclaim bred from four generations of EX Dams sold for 6,800 gns topped the sale
  • Six heifers sold for prices greater than 4,000 gns

Eedy Lemagic Acclaim (Lot 12) sold for 6,800 gns was the top price of the sale. She is backed by four generations of EX Dams; Eedy Solomon Acclaim EX91 2E x Eedy Destry Acclaim EX95 6E x Eedy CIX Acclaim EX95 4E (EX97 Mammary). She is bred from the same family as Eedy Damion Acclaim EX94 2E who won 1st Senior Cow in milk & Honourable Mention National Dairy Show 2023. Her maternal sister Eedy Sidekick Acclaim is Classified VG 2 Year-Old. Born in December ’23 she is sired by Comestar Lemagic VG87. Her EX91 2E Dam is a full sister to Eedy Solomon Acclaim ET EX and a maternal sister to Eedy Acclaims Lambda VG86 2 Year-Old sold for 7,900 gns to the Ballyelly herd at the Eedy youngstock sale 2022.  Her Grand Dam Eedy Destry Acclaim EX95 6E is due her 8th calf at the end of September. Bred from an EX95 Dam, she is an IHFA Diamond award recipient with a lifetime yield to date of 90,622 kgs milk, 6,737 kgs milk solids, 3.50 % Protein.

Eedy Ranger Twizzle Red (Lot 4) sold for 5,800 gns was the next top price. A red Twizzle, she is bred from seven generations of VG/EX Dams. Born in December ’22 she sold with a P.D. to Siemers Wolf Hulu RC (sexed) with a due date of early November. She is sired by 3Star OH Ranger Red. Her Dam Hallow Awesome Twizzle Red VG89 is a potential 6th generation EX Dam now in her 3rd lactation with a VG 2 Year-Old maternal sister from Hallow Solomon Twizzle 2 ET EX94 3E who won Reserve Champion RUAS Balmoral Spring Show 2024 and Honourable Mention Tullamore National Livestock Show 2024.

Eedy Haniko Acclaim (Lot 13) sold for 5,000 gns commanded the next top price. Born in November ’23 she is sired by Siemers Lambda Haniko EX92. She is a potential fifth generation EX and is bred from eleven generations of VG/EX Dams. Her Dam Eedy Applicable Acclaim EX92 2E has completed three consecutive lactations in excess of 10,000 kgs milk with an average milk solids yield of 779 kgs CFP/lactation. She is one of three EX Maternal sisters bred from Eedy Shottle Acclaim EX, a daughter of Eedy CIX Acclaim EX95 4E (EX97 Mammary).

 

The Edy herd is located at Lisroe, Lyre, Clonakilty, Co. Cork. Last year the herd averaged 9,495 kgs milk, 4.06 % Fat, 3.38 % Protein, 706 kgs milk solids. The milking herd totaling 90 head overall includes 85 VG/EX cows and heifers.

 

Other top prices include

Eedy Sidekick Apple (Lot 3) sold for 4,500 gns. She is a potential 12th generation VG/EX from the Apple family. With a P.D. to Westcoast Perseus, she is due to calve in mid September. She is maternal sister to Ballydehob Denver Apple VG 2 Year-Old and Ballydehob Yamaska Bethany EX91 2E who recorded 9,741 kgs milk, 755 kgs milk solids in her fourth lactation (294 d).

Eedy Applicable Fame (Lot 28) also sold for 4,500 gns. Her Grand Dam is a maternal sister to Eedy Doorman Fame EX93 (Max score), Supreme Champion National Dairy Show 2023. She is a potential ninth generation VG/EX. Born in November ’23 she is sired by Stantons Applicable VG86. Her third Dam Clonpaddin BK Fame EX93 5E is a maternal sister to 16 EX cows.

Eedy Eye Candy Fame (Lot 14) sold for 4,100 gns. She is a potential eighth generation VG/EX. Born in December ’23 she is sired by MB-Luckylady Eye Candy. Her Dam Eedy King Doc Fame VG86 2 Year-old was 3rd Junior heifer in-milk Emerald Expo 2024 and she is maternal sister to Eedy Doorman Fame EX93 (Max score), Supreme Champion National Dairy Show 2023, Eedy Solomon Fame EX92 2E, Eedy Denver Fame VG87.

Eedy Star Diva (Lot 18) sold for 3,300 gns. She is a potential fourth generation EX and a potential fifth generation 3.50 % Protein Dam. Born in February ’23, she sold with a P.D. to Renegade (sexed) with a due date of mid February. Her sire is Aquila Aristocrat Star.

Eedy Rubels Rosalin Red (Lot 21) sold for 3,200 gns. She is a potential fourth generation EX Red & White. A February born calf, she is sired by Hoogerhorst DG OH Rubels Red. Her Dam Eedy Rager Rosalin EX recorded a second lactation yield of 9,744 kgs milk, 757 kgs milk solids (305 d). Her Grand Dam Eedy Jotan Rosie EX92 3E is a maternal sister to Eedy Avo Rosalin EX, Eedy RDZ Roslyn EX91 3E and Eedy Faber Rosalin VG88.

The Coolnagree herd of Seamus O’ Leary, Adamstown Co. Wexford and the Beechlands herd of Walter Crean, Enniscorthy Co. Wexford combined for a production sale of 60 fresh calved heifers at Waterford Ross Marts Ltd, New Ross, last Friday February 21st.  This year marks the 3rd edition of this joined production sale and the offering on the day again included numerous Red & Whites. A large crowd was in attendance and the bidding activity was very brisk from beginning to end.

Beechlands Bart Stella (Lot 46) sold for €3,750 was the top priced heifer. Calved less than a month at exactly 2 years of age, her sire is Broekhuizen Bart (FR6100) and she is bred from the Stella family. Her Dam Beechlands Cancun Stella EX 3E recorded 10,400 kgs milk 848 kgs milk solids, 4.50 % Fat, 3.65 % Protein in her 4th lactation with a SCC of 54 (312 days). In six lactations she has averaged 9,725 kgs milk, 789 kgs milk solids, 4.50 % Fat, 3.61 % Protein per lactation with a lifetime average SCC/lactation of 51.

Coolnagree Youri Begonia Red 2 (Lot 45) sold for €3,725 was the next top price. A Red & White heifer bred from the Begonia cow family with tremendous longevity in the herd. Her EX93 7E Grand Dam and EX91 5E 3rd Dam had lifetime longevity averaging 11.5 lactations between them. Born in December ’22 she is sired by Youri (FR5722) and her sire stack includes Jet Red x Wisconsin Red x Zenith x Prelude x Starbuck.

Beechlands Renegade Roxy (Lot 38) sold for €3,700 and Beechlands Challenger Betsy (Lot 48) sold for €3,650 were also top-end prices. Beechlands King Doc Lupin (Lot 16) and Beechlands Renegade Birch (Lot 56) both sold for €3,550 respectively.

A total combined sale price of €4,400 for mother and daughter sold individually was achieved on two occasions. Colnagree 2089 Banker Red (Lot 15) calved less than a month and sired by Rager Red EX sold for €3,500. Her heifer calf Coolnagree Patriot Banker Red (Lot 15A) sired by the British Friesian AI bull Bradash Patriot Red (FR8199) sold for €900. Coolnagree 2059 Banker RC (Lot 11) sired by Hanrahan Olympus (FR5239) and backed by six generations of VG/EX Dams sold for €3,400. Her Red & White heifer calf Coolnagree FR4594 Banker 2488 (Lot 11A) sired by Rager Red EX sold for €1,000.

Donegal Club Heifer Sale 2025

Donegal Club sale of calved heifers tops €3,860

The Donegal Holstein Friesian Breeders club annual sale of fresh calved heifers on Wednesday March 5th witnessed a very brisk trade as 41 heifers sold for an average price of €2,841. The catalogue offering was once again to a high standard with a quality offering of top merit heifers assembled for the annual show and sale event organised by the club.

Culcara Olympus Frieda 1 (Lot 38) bred by Charles McCandless, Culdaff sold for €3,860 was the sale topper. Calved five weeks, she is yielding 32 litres/day. She calved in at 23 months of age and is sired by Hanrahan Olympus (FR5239). Her Dam Culcara Lotus Frieda 2 VG85 recorded 11,138 kgs milk, 783 kgs milk solids in her third lactation.

Culcara Olympus Janice (Lot 17) also bred by Charles McCandless sold for €3,780 was the next top price. Calved less than a month she is yielding 35 litres/day. She has a PTA of +264 kgs milk, +28 kgs milk solids, +0.12 % Fat, +0.03 % Protein. Her sire is Hanrahan Olympus (FR5239) and she is bred from a VG Dam, now in her 3rd lactation and performing well in the Culcara herd.

Culcara Olympus Fame 2 (Lot 5) sold for €3,750 completed a trio of top prices for Charles McCandless on the day. Calved five weeks at exactly two years of age, she is yielding 30 litres/day. Bred from the “Fame” family she is a potential 12th generation VG/EX.

  • Culcara Praser Ruth (Lot 15) calved five weeks and yielding 36 litres/day sold for €3,740.
  • Culcara Olympus Fame (Lot 27) calved one month and yielding 32 litres/day sold for €3,540.

A summary of other prices includes

Ballyelly Boeing Flo (Lot 14) bred by Trevor Lockhart, Ramelton sold for €3,300. She won Honourable Mention in the pre-sale show. Calved two months, she is yielding 32 litres/day. Sired by Dewgood 737 Boeing P Red (FR6874) she is a potential 8th generation VG/EX. Her Dam Ballyelly Punch Florence EX 3E recorded a 6th lactation yield of 11,071 kgs, 912 kgs milk solids, 4.81 % Fat, 3.42 % Protein, SCC 36, (303d).

Ballyelly Beoing P Precious (Lot 4) bred by Trevor Lockhart, Ballyelly herd, who was the Champion in the pre-sale show sold for €2,950. Calved less than three weeks, she is yielding 30 litres/day. Also sired by the AI bull Boeing P Red, her Grand Dam Crossnacole D Back Precious 2 EX 2E recorded a 4th lactation yield of 11,316 kgs milk, 819 kgs milk solids (305 d).

 

Vendors on the day also included Alastier & Catherine Grier, Ramelton and Kenneth Witherow, Convoy. Raphoe Livestock mart was the venue.

Alexander Tinney, Drumcairn herd, Letterkenny was the Judge of the pre-sale show.
